The following Thursday, after Reese left for work, Vivien dressed and fixed her hair in a neat bun at her nape. She had an appointment to see the saloon with Grady. Sheâd been in one but didnât do any looking around. He would show her the operation during the day when no one else was there. That was okay with her, because she just wanted to see all of the inside just once.
She stepped outside and suddenly felt a terrible pain in her head and the world went black.
âFern, are you sure this is the right thing to do? What if she dies?â Rocky slapped the reins against the horsesâ backs.
Fern watched the animals as they tried to eat whatever vegetation they could find beside the road. âRocky, thatâs the idea. She needs to die. Reese wonât come to me in need of consoling if she lives.â
She knew she hurt him, but she wasnât in love with Rocky and no matter how much he loved her, she simply couldnât return the emotion. Her heart belonged to Reese and she was sure, with Vivien out of the way, he would be more receptive to her love.
Rocky sighed. âIf you say so. You know Iâll do anything for you.â
Fern reached up and patted the manâs cheek. âI know, and I appreciate it very much. How much farther to this cabin?â
âItâs just a shack and itâs off the road around the next bend. Itâs more than twenty miles from town. Even if she wakes up, sheâll die before she reaches Eureka.â
She rubbed her hands together. Soon Vivien will be dead and Iâll have Reese. âGood. I donât want blood on either of us. We also need to be each otherâs alibi. You took me out for a picnic as part of our courtship.â
âWhereâd we go for this picnic?â
âGood question because you know Reese will ask. Weâll say we were in the mountains, to avoid the heat.â
âOkay. Mountains to avoid the heat. Got it.â
The cabin was a shack, just like Rocky told her. He pulled up out front and came around where he lifted his arms toward her. She had to admit, he was quite the gentleman and that in itself was hard to find. At least for her. Vivien probably didnât have any trouble with men treating her like a lady. Maybe, rather than kill her, Fern should take some lessons from her. Too bad, but that canât happen. Sheâs got to die. Fern would give her a few days and then come back and untie her. Afterward she could let Reese know where she was because he had to be the one to find her. He had to need consolingâ¦by Fern.
